Stress is the non-specific response of the body to any demand. There are two types of stress, Unstressed and Distress. The root “Eu” = positive; it stems from the Greek word for good. “Dis” = negative, or bad. This latter stress is:
• Unregulated stress
• Eustress that has reached the point of diminishing return
• Levels of stress which, if not treated, will manifest itself in physical symptoms
• Stress which controls us
Signs of stress:
• Waking up tired
• Hands feeling moist, clammy
• Difficulty falling asleep
• Difficulty concentrating
• Dry or tight mouth
• Shaking, trembling
• Frequent constipation or diarrhea, or both
• Urge to confide in someone or to seek assurance
Thoughts that Stimulate Stress:
• People must love me or I will be miserable.
• I am inferior.
• People shouldn't act the way they do.
• Strong people don’t ask for help.
• I can’t change what I think.
• I should be better than others.
• I can’t stand the way others act.
• I must depend on others.
• I should help everyone who needs it.
• People ought to do what I wish.
• Change is unnatural.
• I am not responsible for my behavior.
• I have no problems.
• I should be able to control my kids.
• There is no true love.
• My childhood must always affect me.
• My emotions cannot be controlled.
• Making mistakes is terrible.
• I must never show my weaknesses.
• It is others’ responsibility to solve my problems. |
